Haven’t done much photoshop painting in a while. So heres one i was doing for fun. Its actually a complete rip off of a concept by dylan cole but i had fun painting it. Incidentally, he’s got a new look website up and running now

Johannes Vloothuis has written probably the best composition guide i’ve seen. More a guide for painting landscapes, it covers just about all the rules i’ve ever heard of. Great reference

Visual Perception and Aesthetics

Really good tutorial from Steven Stahlberg on visual perception and what makes an image pleasing to the eye. Definately worth a read and has some interesting psychological stuff.

Today i’ve been practicing painting some clouds

National Gallery

It was raining yesterday lunch and to celebrate the fine weather I thought i’d stay inside and go to the national gallery. Was looking for some inspiration from the old masters. In particular i decided i really like these ones

Gaspard Dughet – top two. ‘Landscape with Elijah and the angel’ / ‘landscape with the union of Dido and Aeneas’.

Francisque Millet - middle left. ‘Mountain landscape with lightning’.

Great colour, compostion and flow to these above pieces. Its beautiful. Should be taught in schools

Meindert Hobbema – bottom left. ‘The avenue of middelharnis’.

Jan van de chapelle - bottom right. ‘A Dutch Yacht firing a Salute as a Barge pulls away, and Many Small Vessels at Anchor’. – i think he could have maybe abbrieviated this.

I just liked these ones, especially the shapes of Jan van de chapelle.
